Our favorite local coffee roaster is not a shy guy if you catch him face to face. Phillip Meech, master coffee roaster for over 20 years and owner of Caffé Lusso in Redmond, is passionate and shares a wealth of knowledge when it comes to growing, harvesting, roasting and brewing the perfect cup. Growing up on a farm, he has the heart and soul of a farmer and it’s his mission to make sure all the beans he purchases are at a fair working wage for those farm families, even if it means he pays a bit more!
Our Pomegranate Bistro Espresso Roast is single-origin and made possible by the support of Agros International: Our drip coffee beans are grown by a small community of families in Trapichitos, Guatemala. Agros is a non-profit that makes it possible for rural, poor families in Central America and Mexico to own their own land. This means when you purchase Pomegranate Bistro coffee, you are directly supporting the ways in which Agros is eliminating poverty in these countries.
Also known as La Trinidad (the Trinity), Trapichitos is an Ixil community that has persevered through great challenges. Squeezed together for many years on just 25 acres of land, the original 85 families organized themselves to purchase land 25 minutes from their homes. After five frustrating years and many fruitless attempts to acquire land, the community approached Agros for assistance in April 2000. With Agros’ support, local leaders finally had the financial backing to approach the landowner. The 635-acre tract of Trapichitos was purchased in November 2000.
After a long-term partnership with Agros, the community has reached sustainability milestones, preparing them for self-sufficiency and continued growth. Agros staff continues to be in touch as the families finish making land loan repayments and participate in the regional coffee project with neighboring communities.
Caffé Lusso‘s roasting style doesn’t have a name and instead they roast to highlight the distinctions of origin. Owner Phil Meech’s roasting style is constantly changing and adapting to the varieties of coffee he roasts. Although he has been roasting for over 20 years, he still thinks that he has barely scraped the surface of the art of coffee roasting. Phil works directly with individual farms and farmers to locate the best coffee and this is his way ensuring that the best sustainable crops receive the best prices.
